Dynamic DNS is basically an extension to the standard DNS system.  A method to automatically update your DNS records whenever your IP changes was created and has been named 'Dynamic DNS'.  For instance, if the IP address on your server changes at 2am you don't have to worry about it.  Once your system sends the Dynamic DNS update it will automatically correct the host records and put you back on the web.

You need Dynamic DNS even if you have a static IP address.  Every time you change your DNS records there is a number that is also handed out with each query.  This number is a time-to-live value.  Anyone who looks up your domain will also cache your records for this time-to-live value.  If your current DNS provider sets the TTL to a few hours, or even days, what happens when your in a hurry?  Well, let's just say it'll feel like your sitting in a traffic jam and your trying to get somewhere in a hurry.  Don't let yourself get caught in this situation, switch to Dynamic DNS before it's too late.
